Additionally, it is treated against rust, along with the wire that connects the springs in a specific way to ensure the springs do not come loose from the metal frame. The felt layer is thermally compressed cotton that acts as an insulator between the spring and the sponge layers, so there is no friction between the spring and the layers above it, and it also gives the mattress firmness and insulates spring noise.
